There’s nothing Tabard enjoys more than a supper accompanied by show tunes.
Normally diners know when to expect table-side entertainment – perhaps they’ve bought tickets to a musical brunch or a cat cafe run by the cast of Cats.
However, unsuspecting customers at Pizza Express in Trafalgar Square were treated to a surprise slice of West End spirit when their waiting staff burst into song.
The staff turned out to be cast members of West End musical Waitress, which is running at London’s Adelphi Theatre, in disguise.
They were performing in celebration of the reopening of Pizza Express’ refurbished Trafalgar Square location.
Cast members including Marisha Wallace and Evie Hoskins sang Opening Up, from the musical, accompanied by seven of the pizza-maker’s resident ‘pizzaiolos’, who flared dough in unison to the performance.
In photos of the event, some of the diners appear to be truly delighted at the spectacle – while others look slightly bemused that their meal has been interrupted.
Wallace said: “We had so much fun surprising diners with some of the show’s most recognisable songs. The look on everyone’s faces when we began was amazing – I’d love to do it all over again.”
She added: “Our show is all about the fun of baking and is jam-packed with songs, which are truly good enough to eat.”
