Temisanren Uwawah tells John Byrne about working on his first acting job, for Wall of Comedy production New Skool Life
My first job came in 2017, where I featured as part of the Wall of Comedy production New Skool Life, directed by Joivan Wade. It was my first experience of acting in front of other people since secondary school. Walking on to set affirmed for me what I was meant to do. I didn’t know how, but I knew I would.
I remember seeing the audition information on Twitter. I sent in an email with my portfolio along with a headshot. It was an opportunity I applied for without much second thought and was in shock when I received a response. With limited experience, I was fortunate to be afforded the chance.
At that time, it was the biggest production I had ever seen. The turnaround was quick and I was nervous, but those nerves transformed into excitement. Seeing actors I had grown up watching felt surreal, but being able to observe different approaches to scene and text worked wonders for my confidence. It was filmed in my local area, which was an added bonus.
Looking back, I could have asked more questions. Opportunities arose where I could have benefited from further clarity. ‘There’s no such thing as a silly question’ rings true because the easiest way to learn is to ask.
You must be relentless in pursuit of the things you desire. We are all different, so our journeys will be, too. In an industry where you’ll hear ‘no’ way more than you’ll hear ‘yes’, it’s important to give yourself permission to do and to be. Say ‘yes’ to yourself, whether that’s creating your own work, collaborating with others or living a full life. For me, playwriting provides an outlet for my creativity, but also opportunities for other actors. There will be moments of stress but never lose perspective. Hold tight to the privilege that is doing what you love.
