Actor, writer, teacher and founder of DE-MYS-TIFY acting workshops, Lilly Driscoll offers her advice to students
I started acting with a local youth group when I was 14, and got my first agent at 16.
I’ve always felt passionate about supporting up-and-coming actors, in particular those from low socio-economic backgrounds. I could see the industry failing to support us, so I wanted to try to create that support.
I think it’s just about finding your people. Having the right people in your corner, those who know what the highs and lows feel like.
I would put people that haven’t been privately educated on boards. That’s just the start really – an open-door policy for freelancers; more salaried positions; less unpaid ‘opportunities’.
The best is when an actor sends me a message to say they got a job, or signed with a new agent. Least favourite is probably the tough-love aspect. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does it’s always difficult.
My own personal champions are Abi Zakarian and Morgan Lloyd Malcolm; they’ve supported DE-MYS-TIFY from day one and I’ll be forever grateful for their support. I would tell students to find their own champions in this industry, because that’s where magic lives.
Just be yourself and be kind. That’s all.
I listen to podcasts about psychology, because it helps to remember there’s something bigger than me. Everyone says yoga, don’t they? But it always makes me feel better. It’s getting to the mat that’s the hard part.
