Theatres are trying all kinds of weird and wonderful tactics to bring in new audiences these days. One venue has decided to focus its energies on a particularly disengaged demographic – pets. Brighton Open Air Theatre already caters well for its canine audiences, with previous ‘dog-friendly shows’ including Houndini (magic for dogs), Barking! (comedy for dogs) and Laurie Anderson’s Music for Dogs.
This summer the venue has announced Doggy Style Pop Bingo on July 14, which is billed as the world’s first bingo for dogs. Instead of numbers, attendees will check songs off their bingo cards, all canine-themed of course. But not wanting to leave anyone feline left out, the venue has announced Brighton’s first fashion show for cats. Feline fashionistas no longer need to sit at home browsing through clothing cat-alogues because now they can attend a real-life cat-walk.
Theatre manager Anne-Marie Williams said: “You’ve got to be kitten me? Our audiences love our shows for dogs, and the Pop Bingo Doggy Style Disco is set to be another bestseller. It’s only fair that we accommodate our feline friends equally, so I’m delighted to have been able to add a show for cats and their families to our 2019 season.”
The event will allegedly take place on July 14 at 2pm, with tickets starting at £1 for cats and £8 for their humans. But Tabard is aware this announcement coincides with April 1, so is hoping the event does indeed go ahead, as it sounds like it could be fur-midable if pulled off with the right cat-ittude…
