New portraits of playwrights including Timberlake Wertenbaker and Mike Leigh are to be displayed at Southwark Playhouse.
The free Playwrights in Focus exhibition features new pictures by theatre photographer Bronwen Sharp, and is situated in the theatre’s bar area from May 15 to November 15.
Explaining her inspiration behind the exhibition, Sharp told The Stage: “I always enjoy photographing actors but it’s easy to forget that the people writing the plays they star in are amazing subjects too. I have long been fascinated that there are so many renowned British playwrights and I’ve wanted to be able to showcase that for a while.”
She continued: “Many of them have links to Southwark Playhouse, which – with its reputation for new writing – is the perfect home for them. I hope that these brand new portraits reveal a bit more about the writers behind people’s favourite plays and helps bring playwrights into the focus they deserve.”
Other playwrights in the exhibition include Steven Berkoff, Polly Stenham, Anya Reiss, Simon Stephens and Arnold Wesker.
Also featured are Dennis Kelly, Bola Agbaje and EV Crowe, as well as Tim Crouch, Nick Payne, Tim Price and Penelope Skinner.
The display follows a similar exhibition at Manchester’s Royal Exchange that depicts playwrights in a place where they find inspiration.
