A former ticketing manager at theatre website WhatsOnStage has been given a 16-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to stealing more than £80,000 from the company.
Daniel Lewis, previously known as Daniel Hunt, was sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, as well as 240 hours of unpaid work, a statement from WhatsOnStage said.
Lewis worked as a ticketing manager for the site, and last month submitted a guilty plea to stealing £80,873 during his time with the company, whose operation includes a ticketing business and online theatre news and reviews.
He left London-based WhatsOnStage to join Ambassador Theatre Group earlier this year, but was sacked from ATG when the theft at WhatsOnStage was discovered in April. The Stage understands that Lewis had worked in ticketing for more than a decade.
Sita McIntosh, chief operating officer at WhatsOnStage, said: “We’re glad to finally draw this matter to a close. We’re family at WhatsOnStage, and the events of the past eight months have been difficult for us all.
“We would like to thank the police for their assistance and support in resolving this matter, and we look forward to getting back to business as usual.”
Lewis was sentenced at a hearing at Southwark Crown Court in London on December 3.
