British musical Pieces of String is to be made available to stream online and to more than 3 million students, as part of a deal with Digital Theatre.
The show, by Gus Gowland, will be on the Digital Theatre site from September 20, under the site’s Perfect Pitch collection.
Pieces of String was developed by Perfect Pitch, and was filmed during its run at the Mercury Theatre Colchester, in a co-production with the Booking Office.
Perfect Pitch producer Andy Barnes said: “This is a beautiful production of a wonderful and relevant story that Gus created. Our partnership with Digital Theatre has meant we have been able to preserve the original production for the long-term and allow audiences who couldn’t get to Colchester a chance to see it.”
He added: “This also ties in with our ambition to attract younger audiences to musicals with the show also available on Digital Theatre Plus, which through 1,200 subscriptions across the world makes the production available to more than three million students.”
The production has been nominated for best musical production at this years UK Theatre Awards, with Gowland nominated in the best composer category for this years’ The Stage Debut Awards.
Mercury Theatre executive producer Tracey Childs said: “We are incredibly proud to have championed this new British musical. Having first seen a workshop for Pieces of String in 2012, it has been an exciting and fulfilling journey working with Gus Gowland, Perfect Pitch and the Booking Office to bring the show to fruition with a run in 2018 that proved fantastically popular with our Colchester audiences.”
