Kully Thiarai has announced her final season in charge of National Theatre Wales, which will include a new multimedia musical and a large-scale outdoor show.
NTW’s 2020 season will mark the company’s 10th anniversary, and will be the final programme from Thirari, who leaves as artistic director next year.
Opening the season will be Jon Tregenna’s new musical Hail Cremation!, described as a psychedelic musical about William Price, a Welsh doctor who became an eccentric figure in Victorian society and gained notoriety for pioneering cremation.
Starring Lee Mengo, the multimedia show will run at Newbridge Memo, directed by Adele Thomas, from March 23 to April 4.
The season will also include Hannah McPake’s Balloon Girl, an outdoor show exploring what it means to be a woman in Wales today.
It was commissioned last year following an open call for artists to submit ideas.
Balloon Girl will take place at various locations in central Cardiff on July 24 to 26, inspired by Cardiff’s Great Exhibition of 1896, which drew ore than one million visitors to the city.
Elsewhere, the company will stage Frank!, a story exploring what it means to connect to nature, which will tour forests across Wales next spring, in addition to Go Tell the Bees, by its NTW Team network, which has co-created the piece with communities in Pembrokeshire.
It will be staged in Manorbier and Pembroke and is based on a community-chosen theme of the environment, nature and climate.
NTW’s programme also includes a digital work, Wild Scenes at Cardiff, by Kyle Legall and Mike Pearson, which offers an hour-by-hour account of the four-day Cardiff Race Riots in 1919.
Thiarai, who leaves in March to oversee Leeds 2023, said: “It has been a privilege to lead this exceptional company over the last three and a half years and to be able to mark its remarkable 10 years. I have worked with a huge number of wonderfully talented people and have seen a broad-range of talent develop through the company.
“Having had the privilege of directing a show in the inaugural year of NTW, I’m thrilled that our 10th anniversary season brings together some of the most exciting talent in Wales and celebrates some of the truly extraordinary moments in this nation’s history.”
Thiarai will be replaced at NTW by Lorne Campbell, currently artistic director of Northern Stage.
