Hampstead Theatre will be expanding its month-long submissions window into a year-round operation, as part of a series of initiatives announced by new artistic director Roxana Silbert.
Juliet Horsley has been appointed to the new position of in-house casting director, and two new associate companies have also joined the north London venue – affordable training initiative the Mono Box and Creative Multilingualism, which is a four-year research programme exploring the connections between languages and creativity.
As part of an inaugural Hampstead season that includes six premieres, Silbert announced that she wanted to encourage more playwrights to send in their scripts for consideration, and had therefore opened the theatre’s submissions programme all year round.
It had previously accepted scripts within a month-long window, but will do so throughout the year in order to “offer more pathways to new writers”.
Elsewhere, theatregoers will now be able to see all four main stage shows in the season for the price of three, meaning audiences under 30 can make use of Hampstead’s existing £10 tickets scheme and see four main stage productions for £30.
Ahead of Hampstead’s 60th birthday, the auditorium is being refurbished to include 45 new seats, which it said would help “welcome new audiences and build upon our financial sustainability”.
The work is currently ongoing and will be finished by the time Silbert’s season starts in September.
Her inaugural programme comprises one European premiere – Jordan Tannahill’s Botticelli in the Fire – and five world premieres, including The King of Hell’s Palace by Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig, directed by Michael Boyd, and Al Blyth’s The Haystack, directed by Silbert.
