A theatre in Eastbourne that was closed indefinitely after safeguarding concerns is to reopen with a new operator.
The former Under Ground Theatre, located beneath Eastbourne’s central library, will be renamed the Grove Theatre.
The Under Ground Theatre closed until further notice in June 2018 after the licence of the previous operator, Eastbourne Arts Centre Charitable Trust, was discontinued due to safeguarding concerns.
Redwood Performing Arts Trust has now been appointed as the new operator after reaching a deal with East Sussex County Council, which owns the 150-seat space.
The trust plans to reopen the theatre before Christmas, and said it will present a wide range of theatre productions at the venue, in addition to literary performances, short film screenings and workshops.
Stefan Antoniuk, chief executive of the Redwood Performing Arts Trust, said: “We look forward to presenting a programme of events that provide something for everyone, as well as opportunities for all to develop their skills in the performing and visual arts.”
Bill Bentley, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for communities and safety, said: “We are delighted to have been able to offer this opportunity to Redwood Performing Arts Trust, a previous user of the theatre, and look forward to seeing its plans evolve and develop.
“The trust has already come forward with a programme of events including shows for the Christmas season, and we have no doubt they will make a success of the venture and place the venue at the very heart of the community.”
