Theatre publisher Nick Hern Books is launching a play text discussion group that will run throughout the coronavirus shutdown, offering one free script each week and Q&As with their writers.
The NHB Playgroup will release one play script for free online each week and invite everyone who reads it to send in a question for the writer, who will then record a Q&A for a podcast released the following week.
Plays will be made available each Wednesday, beginning with Anna Jordan’s Bruntwood-prize winning Yen.
Other writers lined up for the initiative include Ella Hickson, Enda Walsh, James Fritz, Winsome Pinnock and Stef Smith.
Matt Applewhite, managing director of Nick Hern Books, said he hoped the discussion initiative would keep the industry and theatregoers connected.
“Among several new initiatives, the NHB Playgroup offers readers and theatre-lovers free access to some of the best contemporary plays, followed by debate and discussion, including with the playwrights themselves. We hope we can encourage many people to discover the pleasures of reading and engaging with some great plays during this time,” he said.
The publisher has also released a selection of resources to support creativity at home, and is partnering with theatre companies including Papatango and Company Three on some of their projects.
