The National Theatre has appointed Alastair Coomer as its new head of casting.
Coomer will replace Wendy Spon, who leaves the National in March after 12 years to pursue a freelance career.
The appointment sees Coomer, currently head of casting at the Donmar Warehouse, return to the theatre where he began his career.
National Theatre director Rufus Norris said he was “delighted” to see Coomer returning to the organisation to head up its casting team, and paid tribute to Spon, whose legacy at the NT he described as “momentous”.
He said: “After five exciting and inspiring years working with Josie Rourke and Kate Pakenham at the Donmar Warehouse, I am thrilled to return to the National Theatre, where I began my career in casting. I look forward to continuing Wendy’s outstanding work finding the next generation of great actors for the National’s three stages.”
Coomer is also co-chair of the Casting Directors’ Guild. He leaves the Donmar as Rourke and Pakenham prepare to step down from the London theatre, with Rourke leaving in 2019 and Pakenham later this year.
