Chichester Festival Theatre’s production of Caroline, Or Change has announced it will transfer to Broadway next year, with star Sharon D Clarke reprising her role.
The musical, which began life at Chichester before transferring to London’s Hampstead Theatre and then into the West End, will begin performances at Roundabout Theatre Company’s Studio 54 in March.
Previews start on March 13, with press night on April 7.
Clarke won an Olivier award for her performance as Caroline Thibodeaux in Michael Longhurst’s production, and she will return to the role again for the show’s New York dates.
Caroline, Or Change has music by Jeanine Tesori, and a book and lyrics by Tony Kushner.
It has choreography by Ann Yee, set and costume design by Fly Davis, lighting by Jack Knowles, sound by Paul Arditti, music supervision by Nigel Lilley and musical direction by Chris Fenwick.
It has previously been seen on Broadway, in 2004, when it earned Anika Noni Rose, who played Emmie Thibodeaux, the Tony award for best featured actress in a musical. The production also starred Tonya Pirkins in the title role, alongside Harrison Chad, Veanne Cox and Chandra Wilson.
