The National Theatre is to phase out pre-recorded announcements that use gender-specific terms.
It comes as Equity urges venues to “consider adopting gender-neutral terminology for collective calls, both front of house and backstage”.
Equity recently published its guidelines for working with LGBT+ performers, addressing casting, venues and performance.
A spokeswoman from the National Theatre said: “We do not use ‘ladies and gentlemen’ back of house, and this is being phased out in our front-of-house announcements. [Pre-recorded] announcements will be replaced in coming months.”
Public addresses will be updated to say “Welcome to the National Theatre.”
Venues including Barbican Centre and Sadler’s Wells have also removed gendered phrases from their front-of-house address systems.
