Jamaal Burkmar has been named the winner of this year’s New Adventures Choreographer award.
The prize is presented by Matthew Bourne through his companies New Adventures and Re:Bourne. Burkmar will receive 12 months of mentoring and support to develop a new work that will be presented by New Adventures next year.
Bourne said Burkmar was a “clear favourite of our judges”.
He added: “We were all impressed by Jamaal’s potential to be a leading choreographer. His exploration of movement through eclectic music choices coupled with his desire to share his personal journey through his choreography make him an exciting and deserving winner.”
Burkmar beat a shortlist comprising six other emerging choreographers including Corey Baker, Tara D’Arquian, Alexandra Green, Eleesha Drennan, Andrew McNicol and Matt Nicholson.
The judges for the awards included Bourne, designer Lez Brotherston, National Dance Company Wales artistic director Caroline Finn and Scottish Ballet artistic director Christopher Hampson.
Bourne’s NAC award is funded through Re:Bourne, the charitable arm of New Adventures. Burkmar’s new project will be overseen by Re:Bourne resident artists Kerry Biggin and Lee Smikle.
