Theatre by the Lake in Keswick has announced Liz Stevenson as its new artistic director.
Stevenson replaces Conrad Lynch, who stepped down from his role in September last year, citing differences with the venue’s board.
Beginning the role in May, Stevenson will announce her first season for 2020 in autumn this year.
She is currently a freelance director and artistic director of Lancashire-based Junction 8 Theatre.
Stevenson is also an associate director at Theatre by the Lake. Her directing credits include the venue’s 2017 Christmas show The Secret Garden, Barbarians at the Young Vic and Moira Buffini’s Handbagged.
“I’ve been coming to the area since I was a child and I have such happy memories of this extraordinary place,” Stevenson said.
“Theatre by the Lake is the most welcoming and beautifully situated theatre I’ve ever come across and I love making work here.”
She added: “It’s an honour to be invited to lead the theatre’s artistic vision at this exciting time, making inspirational theatre for, with and about Cumbrian communities, and building on the theatre’s reputation for making bold and ambitious work.”
James Cobbold, executive director of Theatre by the Lake added: “Liz is an exceptionally talented director with great vision, drive and ambition, and a love of both Cumbria and Theatre by the Lake.
“I’m greatly looking forward to working with her on the exciting next step of our journey.”
