Original Mamma Mia! stars have reunited to make a video for a former cast member who is battling Covid-19 in hospital.
Performers including Caroline Sheen, Melissa Jacques and Siobhan McCarthy performed Thank You for the Music in a YouTube video for Neal Wright, who was the original Pepper in the musical.
The video opens with a message from the original cast members, explaining that the recording has been created for Neal, but is also being performed as a thank you to the NHS for looking after him and others at this time.
Wright is now a partner at JWL Agency, alongside Jimmy Jewell, who said “there are a lot of clients on his books and stakeholders within the industry who are extremely close to him and fond of him”.
Jewell told The Stage that Wright went into self isolation in the middle of March with the typical symptoms of coronavirus, but was admitted into intensive care in hospital two weeks ago, where he tested positive for Covid-19.
“This has been a worrying and stressful time for his close friends and family, and we have been managing the situation as delicately as we can. Neal means so very much to so very many people, and it is with a huge sense of relief that we were able to report that he was transferred out of intensive care to a ward a couple of days ago,” he said.
He added: “Arrangements are being made by his close friends and family for his recovery once he is discharged. The huge wave of love and affection for Neal over the last 24 hours is testament to his fun, loving and generous character, and we can’t wait until he is back with us again.”
