Catford’s Broadway Theatre is due to close for a year, as “urgent health and safety” building works are carried out.
It will remain shut for the majority of Lewisham’s Borough of Culture year.
The venue requires an asbestos check and full electrical rewiring, in addition to “remedial works”.
Lewisham councillor Andre Bourne said: “The majority of the works planned for the Broadway theatre are urgent health and safety requirements and have been programmed to start at the earliest possible opportunity.
“For example the full electric rewire will require all power to be shut off and temporary lighting and power to be provided whilst the works are underway.”
“Before any works can commence a full asbestos survey must be undertaken and any remedial works completed – this will also require the theatre to be shut and access controlled,” he added.
The venue will also be redecorated and access improvements will be made.
The council expects to hire a contractor next March and intends to submit a planning application in spring.
The theatre will close to the public this summer, and is expected to reopen in the summer or autumn of 2021.
