Hackney Empire’s Joanne Benjamin is to join Curve in Leicester as executive producer.

She will fill the vacancy left when previous executive producer Chris Stafford was appointed as the venue’s chief executive in August.

Benjamin is currently a producer at Hackney Empire, and has worked in the theatre industry for more than 40 years in roles including stage manager, theatre manager, general manager and producer.

She joins Curve on January 4 and as executive producer will be responsible for overseeing all productions at Curve, including those by visiting companies, in addition to the commissioning of new work.

Speaking about her appointment, Benjamin said: “Chris’ two years as executive producer have seen him substantially grow Curve’s artistic programme, as well as develop the theatre’s national and international touring portfolio.”

“I look forward to the challenges we will face and am thrilled to build on Chris’ brilliant work as we look to the future together with the board and our very talented team.”

Stafford described Benjamin as “hugely talented and experienced producer” and added: “We very much look forward to working with her as we build the next chapter for Curve.”

The chief executive spoke earlier this year about his desire to increase the venue’s West End transfers and international tours.
