London Coliseum hosts ‘first Instagram photocall’
Around 200 people have attended what is being hailed as the first Instagram photocall, in which members of the public were invited backstage to take pictures of dancers at the London Coliseum.
Rather than holding a traditional photocall with professional photographers, Russian ballerina Irina Kolesnikova invited fans into the central London theatre on August 22 to shoot her in rehearsal for Her Name Was Carmen, which opens tonight (August 23).
Around 200 members of the public attended the call and have been sharing their images on the photo-sharing app using the hashtag #BalletShot.
The production, staged at the Coliseum by the St Petersburg Ballet Theater, transposes Bizet’s Carmen into a present-day refugee camp and aims to raise awareness of refugees stranded in the Balkans.
Kolesnikova said the Instagram photocall felt like the “natural” way to communicate with a contemporary audience, particularly as the production also deals with a present-day issue in its exploration of the global refugee crisis.
“Ballet is the only ‘high art’ to have found a niche among the predominantly young Instagram audience, so it was lovely to meet so many of them today and to see them filtering and sharing all their stunning pictures,” she added.
Her Name Was Carmen runs at the London Coliseum until August 28.
