Re: Production

“Smart look at career and family challenges”

What happens when a couple is in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together, but the question of starting a family starts to divide them?

In Re: Production, playwright Jenna May Hobbs and director Suzanna Ward approach this serious issue in a playful manner – with music, dancing and light audience interaction – shading out the complexities of modern parenthood for heterosexual couples today. This breezy style allows for laughter and deep consideration of the problems.

Karen (Jessie Lawrence) and Tom (Daryl Green) have been together for a long time and they have a happy marriage. But Karen is an embryologist who is working on major research in IVF and Tom is ready to start a family. Each time the question of having kids comes up, Karen tries to defer it.

Re: Production points out that while IVF has helped couples struggling with infertility, there’s no science yet to address the inequities placed on women in society who want to pursue their careers and not have parenting responsibilities set them back professionally and economically. Moreover, to do both jobs well, something has to give. This falls to women to resolve.

Lawrence and Green warmly make their character struggles poignant.
