Lights Over Tesco Car Park

“Wonderfully inventive”

Poltergeist Theatre – remember the name, because these guys are going places. The Oxford-based collective, one of the New Diorama’s Graduate Emerging Companies, already wowed the National Student Drama Festival with its experimental, alien-themed show. Now it’s wowing Edinburgh.

Lights Over Tesco Car Park is one of those shows that’s more interesting for its form than its content – although its content is pretty cool, too. Four performers – Alice Boyd, Julia Pilkington, Rosa Garland and Will Spence – stage a series of interlinked, often meta-theatrical skits, all themed around extra-terrestrial sightings. It’s like a sketch documentary.

We get audience members helping to recount stories of abduction and spaceship sightings. We get Boyd, Pilkington, Garland and Spence recreating their conversations with an Oxford resident convinced an alien is staying in his spare room. We see them chirpily discussing conspiracy theories and philosophical questions.

Jack Bradfield’s production is tremendously creative, intelligently utilising microphones, projectors, smartphones and flying saucers (the sherbet sweets, not actual UFOs). Is there something else going on underneath the fun? Maybe. Perhaps a comment on our attitude towards outsiders, perhaps a generic plea for unity, but this creative show is more about the journey than the destination.
