It’ll Be Alt-Right On The Night

“Markedly mature”

Wound Up Theatre had a hit back in 2015 with Bismillah!, a tragi-comic two-hander featuring a friendship between an imprisoned British soldier and his Isis guard.

They’re back this year with a new show – the somewhat awkwardly titled It’ll Be Alt-Right On The Night. Again, it features two men – a Buckfast-fuelled friendship between two squat-dwelling Sheffield punks – but this time the story is told by only one of them.

Writer-performer Matthew Greenhough is a likeably bouncy ball of splutter and swearing as he hops through time to relate how Greeny and Stevo grew up together in the late 1990s, discovered punk together in the early 2000s, then drifted down different roads when one moved to London and became woke, and the other stayed behind in Sheffield and got angry.

Director Jonny Kelly’s proceeds in short, sharp bursts of fast, frenzied narration, interspersed with slightly odd, ill-fitting excerpts of jazz-punk played live by trumpeter Steven Wright.

Greenhough, dressed in black with braces, repeatedly plays LPs on a ceaselessly spinning record player by his feet.

It’s an animated, absorbing hour, with a predictable but still potent message about the dangers of echo chambers and the importance of empathy.

A markedly mature work from a humane and humorous company.
