Ejaculation: Discussions About Female Sexuality

“Earnest but confusing”

Finnish artists Essi Rossi and Sarah Kivi set out to educate themselves and the audience on women, sex, and desire in Ejaculation: Discussions About Female Sexuality.

Using audio recordings of interviews with women and live music by Kivi, they offer an ultra-low-key theatre work that operates as a haphazard audio documentary.

There is very little visual material to the show apart from a large draped painting of a naked body that Rossi oddly massages. Rossi moves throughout the audience asking probing questions about sex but it’s unclear if she wants an answer to her questions.

Some people nervously respond, but the rules of engagement are not clear. Sometimes Rossi touches Kivi while Kivi sings and loops audio. It adds up to a confusing theatrical landscape for an already tricky topic.

The audio clips reveal a great deal of shame, embarrassment and anxiety. The women are from all over the world, suggesting a “universality” in women suffering these worries in silence. Though we do not get needed background or context on the speakers.

A foray into squirting feels like a diversion. While the interviews open up questions of power, control, identifying and serving your own needs, the piece doesn’t build on them.
