Do Our Best review at Underbelly Cowgate, Edinburgh – ‘bizarre and brilliant’

At the age of 30, Sephie is back in the Girl Guides. After three failed attempts she’s finally hoping to get her Entertainers badge.

Remy Beasley, who writes and performs, wanted to create a piece that processed some of the grief she felt at losing her mother to cancer. Obliquely, the result is a fantastically dislikeable monster in Sephie, grotesque and vulnerable at the same time. She describes herself as “severely talented”, and berates and blames everyone around her – including the poor stage manager Caitlin – for her own considerable failings.

She’s hoping Brown Owl will turn up soon to assess the show. Meantime, with sidetracks and weird tangents, Sephie takes us through her three previous badge attempts.

So far, very good. And then the piece bursts into a wild climax that doesn’t make much sense, and involves a goldfish, but is just absolutely brilliant.

Beasley exquisitely turns her and our emotions on their head. One second she’s a supremely narcissistic, conceited child, and then she’s quietly grieving and so are we. Her comic sense is extremely acute and there’s great interaction with audience members.

Somewhere between character comedy and a monologue about grief, the show ends up being completely its own wonderful thing.
