If you’ve ever wondered why shoe repair shops also sell keys, this is the musical for you.
Gigglemug Theatre may have created a super-daft story around the founding of the ubiquitous store, but it backs it up with some great songs and decent production values to boot.
Lyricists and performers Sam Cochrane and Chris Baker shamelessly violate the Romeo and Juliet story, fleshing it out with gay fishermen, the invention of the padlock and the perils of mixing wine and parenting. If you imagine Mischief Theatre creating a musical, you’re close to Cochrane and Baker’s comic style.
To pull such a venture off, Gigglemug has an extremely strong team, not least in Theo Caplan and Tom Slade, who have crafted a bright, infectious score to complement the zany comedy.
The star-crossed lovers played by Robert Madge as Monty and Sabrina Messer as Keeleigh are consummate musical clowns. Madge in particular is a devilishly adroit physical comedian, revelling in the camp without drawing focus, while Messer delivers a decent, tongue-in-cheek belt in her solo.
Timpson: The Musical may thrive on sophomoric humour and shoe puns, but it’s tightly scripted, inventively staged and could well represent the dawn of a new music-focused comedy collective.
