The Scouse Cinderella review at Royal Court, Liverpool – ‘a Christmas crowd-pleaser’

There’s only one way to follow the greatest story ever told, and that’s with the world’s favourite fairytale.

The Royal Court has given Cinderella a Scouse makeover in a show which, while not matching the inventiveness of last year’s Scouse Nativity, still provides plenty of seasonal silliness for an adult audience.

The Scouse Cinderella is more than pumpkins, princes and glass slippers however as writer/director Kevin Fearon has added politics to panto this year to make a point about the Liverpool mayor’s plans to sell off public parkland for new housing.

The show is frustratingly slow off the starting blocks, the first half lacking laughs – the exception being Keddy Sutton’s knowing turn as Mayor Hardupson who has “spent the council’s money on some big French dolls” (Royal de Luxe’s Giants).

It’s a different story after the interval. Here the Court’s cast of experienced comedians step up the pace, following a riotous 12 Days of Christmas with an extended knockabout scene that unfolds across Richard Foxton’s good-looking revolving set with a distinct nod to the antics of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society.

Meanwhile a last-minute twist in the tale means Hayley Sheen’s sweet-voiced liver bird Cinders wins the real prince of her heart. Ahhh.
