Cinderella review at SEC Armadillo, Glasgow – ‘flashy panto that lacks a soul’

Scottish comedy legends the Krankies return to Glasgow’s Armadillo at the SEC after two years away in a version of Qdos Productions’ Cinderella.

A good quarter of the show show is devoted to the husband and wife duo’s comedy routines. One misjudged (and dated) sketch with Janette Tough as “Rocket Man” Kim Jong-un and Ian as Trump falls flat. But an extended pre-walk-down set is mostly a triumph, mixing self-defacing comments on their longevity with classic elements of their act.

Director Jonathan Kiley has cut the pantomime elements back to the basics, leaving little time for the show to breathe. Frances Thorburn as Fairy Alice provides most audience interaction along with some fine vocals. Gavin Mitchell as Ugly Sister Hinger also works hard to engage with the audience, talking to them rather than at them. He and Jonathan Watson as Minger flounce beautifully in Mike Coltman’s extravagant Day-Glo outfits.

Gemma Lawson’s bright and cheerful Cinderella has little in the way of business with the Uglies, but some nicely judged scenes with Janette Tough as Buttons and Ian as Hardup. Keith Jack as Charming with Peter Vint as Dandini pit their strong voices against Ramon Van Stee’s sound design, but they get lost in the mix.

This Cinderella has plenty of flash, a well-drilled dance troupe, loads of laughs and a veritable A-to-Z of local references. Yet it lacks a freewheeling element of anarchy and, amid all its glitz, it lacks a soul.

Verdict
The Krankies' routines dominate a pantomime that is otherwise bereft of ideas
