LP Creatives’ splendidly costumed duo Tom Beard and Rachel Born blend professional flair with zestful enthusiasm in their highly entertaining, pantomime-style adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s ever-popular classic pirate tale. With rapid costume and vocal changes, they vividly conjure its colourful buccaneers – Billy Bones, hugely bearded Ben Gunn and fearsome Captain Flint – but mostly focus roles as wily Long John Silver and young Jim Hawkins respectively.
With minimum props – a silver treasure chest, barrel and ship’s wheel – setting the scene, and an inventive backcloth of colourful images enlivening the action, they pursue their nautical quest in engagingly rollicking style. Panoramic visuals are a key element, with sundry pirates offering clues to the treasure’s whereabouts, Sneaky Beaky the parrot giving lively comment, and Bananas the monkey finally joining him as endearing on-stage puppets.
Pantomime-style audience involvement comes aplenty, with Boogie Gold Treasure Dance every time a treasure-clue is found, children shrieking “look behind you” whenever Bananas vanishes, rousing songs such as A Pirate’s Life for Me and Row, Row, Row Your Boat, and kids on stage as instant pirates.
LP Creatives triumph with this bright, fast-paced action and fun-packed show. Devised for younger children, it hugely delights them – and the whole family, too.
