Cirque Eloize: iD review at Peacock Theatre, London – ‘spectacular’
Circus disciplines meet hip hop dance in iD, the new show from contemporary circus company Cirque Eloize.
The production buzzes with energy. As one artist scales the heights of a Chinese pole, his feats are accompanied by the breakdancers on the floor. Throughout iD, movement from one discipline is used alongside another, as director Jeannot Painchaud skilfully draws together this company’s diverse range of talents.
This results in a linear, smooth-running show rather than a series of individual acts. A contortionist performs a sweet and playful duet with a hip hop dancer and later, as she uses her skills on the silks, her graceful aerial dance is perfectly complemented by a partner on rollerblades.
iD is peppered with inventive twists like these. A fast-moving juggling act utilises other members of the cast to bounce balls off Perspex panes, allowing its charismatic performer to execute a series of complex rhythms and patterns.
Visually, Robert Massicotte’s 3D projections and multi-level set allows for illusions involving hidden doorways and feats of athleticism, adding daring and humour to the piece. At times it all feels a bit flashy, and geared towards crowd-pleasing, but the inclusion of rollerblading and BMX stunts works really well. As the rider scales the set, the precision and risk is evident.
The show saves its greatest effect for the finale. With the energy and thrill of the skate park, the performers somersault upon a trampoline-wall, culminating in a tightly choreographed sequence of vertical leapfrogging. It’s a genuinely spectacular ending to a lively, entertaining show.
