Vampomime review at Belgrade Theatre, Coventry – ‘alternative panto full of puns and silliness’

Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre offers an alternative to the traditional Christmas show with this comedy that blends pantomime and horror.

Written and directed by Nick Walker, co-founder of Talking Birds Theatre Company, Vampomime centres on a theatrical troupe of vampires attempting to stage a production of Beauty and the Beast, which is the panto in the Belgrade’s main house.

Despite this most unlikely of scenarios, Walker has still managed to shoehorn in audience participation, a dame and a couple of “he’s behind yous”.

The script is clever, with lots of silliness and plenty of jokes about Coventry as well as some really unexpected ideas. One of the characters is a puff of smoke who becomes trapped in a vacuum cleaner; another character manages a highly amusing transformation into a bat.

The four-strong cast gives it their all, hamming up the roles so they are all larger than life. Jack Trow plays his part of Vladimir with gusto, throwing himself into the audience in search of a meal. Miriam Grace Edwards has the sickly sweet panto heroine off to a tee.

This is the show for people looking for something a bit different to the usual panto.

Verdict
Lots of silliness and puns make this an alternative comedy night to the traditional pantomime
