Sibling Revelry

Cabaret doesn’t get much better than Sibling Revelry, a wildly entertaining showcase of two of its greatest exponents, who’ve appeared separately in London in the last year with engagements at Crazy Coqs, but now return with their first show together since they first presented an earlier version of this show as part of the inaugural Divas at the Donmar season (now alas no more) all of 17 summers ago.

Ann Hampton Callaway and her younger sister Liz couldn’t be more different as personalities or singers: one dark and tall with a smouldering, smoky voice; the other blonde and brightly effervescent, possessed of one of the loveliest, most shimmeringly clear and unforced sopranos in the business. Yet, to borrow a phrase from Porter’s Friendship, which they sing here, they make “just a perfect blend-ship”. They complement each other ideally, and occasionally offer each other compliments as well as affectionately funny put-downs.

Each is given their own solo moments to shine: Ann with respectively poignant and powerful versions of Old Friend and Don’t Rain on My Parade, Liz with a hilarious rewrite of Sondheim’s Another Hundred People and The Story Goes On, which she first introduced in Baby.

But to borrow the title of another song they share, they make the sweetest sounds singing together, and nowhere more than in what they bill as the Huge Medley, which draws in songs from Chess and Chicago to Wicked and West Side Story. Happy Days Are Here Again closes the show, and it couldn’t be more true now that we have them back in London.

A richly textured evening of musical magnificence from two New York cabaret and theatre veterans
