Our June’s Wedding

You’d need to be hard-hearted not to cheer on this particular marriage. Taking it out of its native Surrey for the first time since it toured there last year, Theatre Exchange’s site-specific, immersive show is a lovely, joyful thing.

We’re guests at Richard’s wedding to June, who’s doubting whether they’re marrying for the right reasons. Add to the mix Hilary, Richard’s highly strung mother, and – via some midsummer magic – Peter, June’s time travelling (and dead) father, and the stage is set.

First devised for a Surrey-wide arts event, Andrew Mulquin’s gently touching, split-location comedy fits perfectly with Brighton’s beautiful, Grade I-listed St Andrew’s Church, followed by the streamer-strewn back room of the Dukebox Theatre’s other space in the pub opposite.

Katy Potter’s skilfully staged production weaves us organically into the story. It blossoms in the hands of the cast, with Adam Farrell effortlessly winning us over as Richard, singling out audience members as family friends (thanks to name badges) on the church steps.

Ultimately, this uplifting family show is about the importance of love and belief – but in each other, not in institutions. And it plays out that simple but vital message with warmth, wit and cake-sharing. And that’s certainly worth raising a glass to.

Verdict
This uplifting, immersive show will soften the hardest hearts
