Apartment 40C

This new musical written by Ray Rackham and Tom Lees is the first tangible product to emanate from the newly-opened London Theatre Workshop in west London. Originally conceived as a play, the story follows the tempestuous relationship between Kathryn and Edward over a period of 30 years. They are played at different stages in their relationship by six actors, all in the same space but not at the same time.

Rackham and Lees’ fresh approach to a fairly well-worn story shows much promise as a first musical. The book allows the fractured narrative to unfold with clarity and flashes of humour in places while a rich, enigmatic score echoes the shades of love, loss and regret that colour the couple’s past.

Alex James Ellison and Alex Crossley struggle slightly with the American accent but capture the impetuous energy of a young couple starting out in life. Lizzie Wofford brings real heart and stunning vocals to the show’s title number, while Peter Gerald’s performance as the older Edward highlights the desolate sense of loss at the death of their son.

Rackham’s direction is littered with beautiful touches that subtly add a further dimension to the story, making Apartment 40C an impressive showcase for this fledgling company.
