Brighton Festival: Trisha Brown Dance Company review at Brighton Dome
These four very different pieces from the Trisha Brown Dance Company take the audience on a journey from the expressive to the avant-garde. It’s like a history lesson in 20th-century dance forms.
The first solo piece has Leah Morrison with her back to us throughout, absorbed in her own angular movements, as if exploring her body for the first time in an unseen mirror.
Next is the UK premiere of the graceful ensemble piece Les Yeux et l’ame, choreographed to the music of Rameau. Here, the dancers begin in duos, caught between dependency and the desire to escape, then in trios and more, in which bodies intersect in complex visual patterns.
Foray Foret is a piece about disturbance and interference. As the dancers are pushed on stage, or dart off, bob around or solidify into poses, a brass band strikes up off stage. It’s on the move, discordant – sometimes synchronising with the choreography, sometimes interrupting it. Other distractions accumulate and make us question the search for perfection in performance.
The theme of interference continues in the last piece For MG: The Movie. A grinding soundscape of industrial noise, kicked buckets, buzzing flies and off-key pianos surrounds the dancers, who stand numb or run in circles.
Dressed in clay-red bodysuits, no longer human, they pattern the space unpredictably. The piece is compelling in its rejection of narrative, visually bizarre, and to be endured rather than enjoyed. It’s the most powerful but least comprehensible of these four strikingly various works.
