Eros-Eris/Echo and Narcissus review at Linbury Studio Theatre London
Australian performer and choreographer Liz Lea’s style crosses continents. Trained in London and India, her work traverses the boundaries of East and West. The music by New Zealand composer John Metcalfe, whose work includes string quartets and pop hits, is another cross genre fusion. Her duet Eros/Eris, which she performed with Fearghus O’Conchuir, was at times a subtle and vibrant interplay. This was based around the idea of Greek philosopher Empedocles that the world is an ever-turning sphere and the cosmos is a constant pendulum moving back and forth through love, Eros, and strife, Eris. The idea of an evolving cycle of ever-changing transfigurations runs through the pleasing work, which at 25 minutes long was shorter than the interval.
In the second half, choreographer Cathy Marston and composer Stuart MacRae blend dance, opera and live video to travel around themes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Echo and Narcissus. In exploring this fatal obsession with self-image, sound and vision are played off each other with two singers, Susanna Andersson and Nikola Matisic, and two dancers. Cathy Marston has always used good dancers, in this case Jenny Tattersall and Jarek Cemerek, but this does not hide the repetitious use from her earlier works of rolling and writhing movements on the stage. This is now becoming tiresome to watch, though mitigated a little by some interesting partnering.
Two world premieres, but neither will have many more performances.
