Romeo and Juliet review at Royal Albert Hall London
English National Ballet performs Derek Deane’s popular in the round production with a cast of over 120 dancers to bring this classic tale to life in a spectacular way. Making their British debuts in the titles roles are Alicia Amatriain and Friedemann Vogel, two superb dancers from the Stuttgart Ballet.
With minimal scenery the ballet needs convincing crowd scenes for the marketplace, ballroom and fight scenes to work and in this respect the production excelled. Together with strong performances from the character roles such as Michael Coleman’s Prince of Verona and the supporting artists, these scenes became engagingly credible for the audience. As Mercutio, Yat-Sen Chang leapt across the arena with gusto, filling it with his powerful stage presence. Tybalt, Benvolio and the others drew the public in as they clashed swords.
Alicia Amatriain danced Juliet with a vivacious though fragile youthful delicacy. Friedemann Vogel as Romeo was impulsive, passionate and bold, dancing with a fine defined technique. The balcony pas de deux was rapturously and memorably danced with delicate slow movements and thrilling lifts performed movingly with a beautiful, loving spirit.
These are dancers one wants to see again and again. English National Ballet is on good form in what must be one of the most accessible and exciting of all ballets. Though disappointingly the orchestral sound of Prokofiev’s score lacked the richness one usually hears, this is good value classical entertainment.
