Under Milk Wood review at CragRats Theatre Holmfirth
Under Milk Wood with a Welsh cast and played by CragRats, a company wherein wit, inventiveness and lots of jolly props are expected. A delicious prospect indeed and so it proves.
There are three actors and they animate and invigorate the lines rather than concentrating solely on their beauty. They are dressed in white smocks and trousers and are barefoot, a welcome sight when almost any other company would choose black. Then there is the tree, a magnificent specimen dominating centre stage with branches reaching to the ceiling. Props are hung on it and one branch doubles, most effectively, as the bar of the Sailor’s Arms.
It is a production with a superbly mischievous spirit. The actors never flag, despite each having to play a coach-load of characters. When there are three characters close together, such as Mrs Ogmore-Pritchard and her two husbands, the playing is superbly interwoven. Gwyndaf Tomos-Evans, as the would-be wife-poisoner Mr Pugh, is sheer delight.
Chris Baglin makes a memorable impact as Captain Cat, sitting in a corner with a fishing net as a cloak. His scene with the ghost of his lost love Rosie, played by Penni Rees, is quite outstanding. When Ms Rees sings Polly Garter’s lament, a dropped pin will not be noticed
Dave Walker, another of the many Cragrats born in the Principality, has created an evocative sound scape. His lighting is eerily and moodily magnificent. Director Tomos-Evans keeps the action fluid and brisk and subtle when necessary.
