Diary: Oooh Arrr’s festive flop and not so happy returns

It’s one thing for audience members to say a show is terrible, it’s quite another for the theatre hosting it to agree with them. But that’s what happened last week when a venue that hosted a production of pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, described by one audience member as “spectacularly bad”, admitted it had been so poor that all audience members would get refunds.

Tabard understands the show in question ran at a community centre in Chippenham, and was billed as having a “sparkling set and glittering costumes”. But, according to the Guardian, viewers complained there were not enough actors and that those who were involved appeared to be untrained.

Following comments about the substandard production qualities and the poor performances, the town council admitted the “images provided by the company for promotional purposes did not reflect the show they brought to us”. It continued: “We had been assured by the theatre production company there would be a cast of six professional actors with industry-standard staging. We were so disappointed with this production and have decided, with support from the theatre production company, to refund all customers who attended Jack and the Beanstalk.”

Well, that speaks volumes, doesn’t it? But just what was the name of the company, you ask? It was Oooh Arrr Productions. You couldn’t make it up.
