Diary: In Mamma Mia! – Here We Go Again, Cher turns back time…
Abba-mania hit the UK this week, with the follow-up film to the hugely successful Mamma Mia!, based on the stage show of the same name. The new film, Mamma Mia! – Here We Go Again, reunites the original cast, including Julie Walters, Christine Baranski and the ever-brilliant Meryl Streep.
Then there’s Cher, who has been brought in to play the mother of Donna, played by Streep. Mother, you cry?! Well, yes, Tabard thought the same, particularly as there are hardly any years between them.
But, lack of age difference aside, there is another issue to do with the relationship between Cher’s character and her daughter, Donna, that has some people perplexed. In the original film, Streep is heard complaining that someone “up there” has got it in for her, before adding: “Bet you it’s my mother.” See the problem? Clearly this implies that Donna’s mum is dead in the first film, so how – how? – is it possible she has made it into the sequel?
Tabard wonders if the producers and writing team simply forgot (though you’d hope they studied the original script) or whether they just don’t care. After all, it’s Cher. Cher! That’s a name any musical producer would like on their poster, right? So maybe it doesn’t really matter. I mean, if we’re going to accept that these characters burst into Abba songs out of the blue, we can probably accept that Cher has come back from the dead.
