Diary: Shenton’s Sir-liness shows Mark of a true Pinter pedant

Our associate editor Mark Shenton [1] is a prolific campaigner. If he’s not doing his bit to stamp out unruly behaviour at the theatre, he’s pointing out inaccuracies in show promotions.

Take Pinter at the Pinter [2], for example. Eagle-eyed Shenters was glancing at posters for that season when something caught his eye. The poster for the Jamie Lloyd-directed show highlights the impressive casting, including David Suchet, Russell Tovey and Antony Sher.

It’s all accurate, it is not? Well, yes it is. But Shentonator’s grief lay in the fact the poster prefixed Sher’s billing with a ‘Sir’. It’s not that he thought Sher doesn’t deserve one, it was that elsewhere Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart didn’t have their titles in front of their names. Shento tweeted:

Go, Shents! Lloyd replied to point out that the title had not been included at Sher’s request, but that it was indeed a mistake. He added that the error had been amended on other material. Thank goodness! But our Shenton didn’t leave it there, and suggested Lloyd needed “someone to go around the tube with duct tape to cover it up.” Sounds like someone is offering. Off you go then, Mark.
