Diary: All kicking off as Othello versus Liverpool FC

In last year’s entertaining show reports feature – detailing behind the scenes quirks at theatres across the land – the stage manager at Liverpool Everyman revealed a near-miss with a group of football fans. Everton were playing Lyon in the Europa League, and the visiting fans’ chants as they made their way to the ground could be heard echoing in the foyer, but fortunately not in the auditorium.

Tabard hears the same theatre faced a different football-related disruption last week. Liverpool FC have made stellar progress in the Champions League and the crucial second leg of the semi-final against Roma fell on the same night as the Everyman’s press night for Othello starring Golda Rosheuvel.

As football is a cultural event in Liverpool, and the theatre was worried about no-shows, an email went out to journalists the Friday before, asking those planning to watch the match to let them know so the tickets could be reallocated. And sure enough, an insider tells us, tickets were returned.

Fortunately, enough theatre lovers were more interested in seeing Golda’s skills than Mo Salah’s, and the auditorium was pretty much full; though there was frenzied checking of phones at the interval for the score.

Tabard hears artistic director Gemma Bodinetz opened her speech at the after-party by congratulating the team, which made it through to the final, and she will be relieved to know Othello isn’t scheduled the same night.

The theatre’s largesse only went so far, as it declined one wag’s suggestion that a TV screen be put at the back of the set, so theatre and footie lovers could get their fill of both at the same time.
