Hands up who’s seen Girl from the North Country? Okay, good. Now, hands up who remembers Ciaran Hinds’ big number in that musical? Wait, none of you?
Well, you’d be forgiven for not remembering the big number because Hinds doesn’t have one. In fact, he doesn’t sing at all in the production and yet he’s found himself with a nod for best actor in a musical at this year’s Olivier Awards .
Bizarre, you say? Not least for Hinds, who admitted to The Stage that he felt embarrassed to find himself nominated among the stars of shows such as Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Hamilton . Hinds said: “I don’t sing in it, which is very weird. It’s embarrassing. I am up against three amazing actors who sing amazingly and I don’t sing a note.”
To be fair to Hinds, the category is best actor in a musical – and he clearly is acting in a musical, so that’s something. Still, Tabard can’t wait to see the excerpts played when the nominations are read out on the night of the awards. There’ll be John McCrea singing from Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Giles Terera belting out Hamilton alongside co-star Jamael Westman. Then there’ll be Hinds, just standing there, tapping his foot but not doing much else.
Tabard knows who he’d want to win, if only for the shock factor.
