Diary: Kanye put a stop to this bad behaviour, Mark?

Might 2019 be the year that mobile phone use is completely eradicated? Will Mark Shenton finally start his one-man policing scheme against this scourge of the auditorium?

Well let’s hope so, because 2018 is looking like it may well be remembered as the year bad theatre etiquette hit new celebrity heights.

Tabard should explain a little more. Last week, a new jukebox musical opened on Broadway about iconic singer Cher – called, imaginatively, The Cher Show. On opening night, one of its celebrity guests was Kanye West. Ye – as he’s now known – was caught using his phone during the show, which prompted a rather angry tweet, as you’d expect, from its star Jarrod Spector, who wrote: “Hey @kanyewest so cool that you’re here at @TheCherShow! If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here. It’s opening night. Kind of a big deal for us. Thanks so much.” Well said. Tabard says let’s name and shame more of the rude buggers!

But Ye, fortunately, did see the error of his ways and took to Twitter to apologise. He responded: “Please pardon my lack of etiquette. We have so much appreciation for the energy you guys put into making this masterpiece.”

Firstly, well done Ye for being so honest about your poor behaviour. Secondly, a masterpiece? Really? Tabard feels you might need to see a few more shows. And before you even think about it, don’t @ me…
