Now, dear reader, you may remember when Tabard recently brought you the news of romantic plans to stage a marriage proposal during the opening night of The Wedding Singer at Leicester’s Curve on Valentine’s Day. Who said romance was dead?

Tabard has been informed that the theatre’s bosses pulled the plug on this plan, so no public declaration of love was made. Meanwhile, it seems those London types just can’t help themselves and a West End audience member did take up the challenge. He proposed to his unsuspecting girlfriend at a performance of Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. What a perfect setting, you’re thinking: getting down on one knee while being serenaded with with some of the most romantic songs of the 20th century.

Well, it would seem that the brave man in question, Nicky King from Northampton, had an ulterior motive when he decided to take the leap in front of an audience full of people. The eagle-eyed among you might have noticed that Mr King shares a surname with the singer whose life and career inspired Beautiful – as will his partner, Carol.

She said “Yes” without hesitation, Tabard was told. King said proposing to his prospective Carol King at the other Carole King’s musical would be “the perfect thing”, and it would seem his new fiancee agrees. He made her feel like a natural woman, apparently.
