Spooked by ghostly goings on: tales from two theatres

If there’s something strange in your theatre, who you gonna call? Well, probably not Ghostbusters as they don’t really exist, silly. But it seems some venues could well do with some sort of ghost hunters right now.

Two venues have recently informed newspapers that they are experiencing some unexplained activity. The first is the Palace Theatre in Plymouth, where renovation work has apparently unearthed a ghost. Video footage appears to show “strange lights and weird objects”, according to one article. A security guard told the Plymouth Herald that the footage appears to show something like a “lightsabre” flashing across the lens.

Is there any possibility that it was actually just someone with a lightsabre messing around? Either that or the security guard had a little too much to drink.

So what else has been going on? Well, actors involved in the new production of The Woman in Black at the Stephen Joseph Theatre think they are being haunted by the ghost of a woman called Mabel, who died many years ago after being chased by a former manager when she was caught stealing money. Mabel plunged over the balcony to her death and now she’s haunting the cast of the play, which itself is about a ghostly woman.

“We’re just hoping no one sees two strange women creeping around, because only one can be the actress,” duty manager Jason Mullen told the Express.

Of course Jason, we believe you. And Tabard’s sure that these ghostly sighting have nothing to do with generating a bit of publicity. Nothing at all.
