When they’re bringing your curtain down, demand to be buried like… drag queen Ruby Venezuela. Tabard hears the legendary drag queen, once the grand dame of Madame Jojo’s in Soho, died last year.
For those of you who don’t know much about the drag scene beyond Lily Savage, Ruby famously helped to hide Princess Diana in a dressing room to evade the paparazzi – something Tabard would have loved to see.
Anyway, when she died, it emerged that Ruby’s final wish was to have her ashes blasted into the sky above her old stomping ground. With this in mind, an auction is now being held, to raise money to give Ruby the send-off she wanted. The auction will feature around 150 items – from boas to headdresses, gowns to necklaces, alongside pantomime costumes and wigs. According to information sent out to media outlets: “These costumes are too gorgeous to be kept in storage forever and we’re sure Ruby would much rather they went to those who appreciated them.”
Tabard is sure they won’t be short of takers. And all the money raised will go towards the rocket needed to send the ashes of Ruby (also known as Brian) into the heavens above Soho, with the rest split between two causes close to her heart. And if all goes to plan, her ashes will “light the sky for her final headline performance” after this year’s Soho Festival on the last Sunday of June. Organisers said: “For the last time, Ruby will give us fireworks.” Wonderful.
