Bless Brian Blessed – what a trouper he is. The actor, 78, was performing in a production of King Lear last week in Guildford when he collapsed on stage with apparent heart trouble.
According to reports, a fellow cast member informed the audience that this was not part of the action, before asking if there was a doctor in the house. Well, lo and behold, there was, and he promptly checked over the “barely conscious” Blessed, and the actor was eventually helped off stage.
But if the audience thought that was their lot for the night, they were wrong. Because 20 minutes later, Blessed returned to the stage and continued his performance, explaining to the audience that he had a “fibrillation”.
Blessed’s agent Stephen Gittins said: “Brian would like to thank everyone for their concern. Brian is thrilled to be working with the Guildford Shakespeare Company and is looking forward to the rest of the run at Holy Trinity Guildford.”
Well, as the saying goes, the show must go on. Tabard wishes Blessed the very best for the rest of the run.
