Attentive readers of The Stage will remember that last year, English National Opera got into hot water when it issued a ban on bringing food and drink into its musicals. It accused tipple-loving audiences of swapping out the contents of their Evian for vodka and gin, which it said had led to “problems” at the Coliseum.
Theatregoers weren’t best pleased, and anyway, who would bother smuggling in alcoholic contraband like a naughty teenager when West End theatre bars are so affordable?
But it’s not just cheapskates who are in on the rum-running act. Fearing she might not like the wine on offer, millionaire fashion designer and Tabard’s favourite Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham, took matters into her own hands when she recently attended a performance of the Tina Turner musical at the Aldwych Theatre.
On Instagram, Beckham can be seen carefully preparing a series of hip flasks to take to the West End show. Topping up the flasks with straight tequila (VB doesn’t mess around), she can be heard saying: “I’ve been told we might not like the wine list. So here we go…”
In a later Insta update, she is enthusiastically busting some of Tina’s iconic moves under the amused instruction of the show’s star Adrienne Warren, suggesting that, in the case of Victoria Beckham and the forbidden tequila, two really did become one.
