It’s not been a good week for theatre. Not in terms of what’s on stage, you understand, but rather what’s been happening off it.
Tabard is aware that theatre etiquette is a hot topic, and not a week goes by when there isn’t another instance of poor behaviour pointed out. But some particularly shocking occurrences this week made Tabard almost choke on his Horlicks.
Firstly, acclaimed performer Rebecca Caine, took to Twitter to tell the world about a member of the audience at her latest project, Preludes. According to Caine, who pointed out she isn’t one to normally criticise audience members, one theatregoer at the show’s penultimate performance “drunkenly” walked across the stage mid-show. Clearly not happy with simply watching the action, this person wanted to be part of the action, too. Unsurprisingly, Caine wasn’t too impressed, and pointed out that such behaviour “ruins it for everyone”. Quite right!
But it was the second incident that really caught Tabard’s eye, and this one comes from Jay McGuiness, who stars in Big. According to the actor, a couple at the Dominion Theatre were getting a little carried away, with a woman pleasuring her boyfriend during the show. And when the seats have only just been cleaned, too! “Please arrive at the theatre ready to watch and not to play,” McGuiness quipped, adding: “At least try to beat in time to the music.”
We had such an enthusiastic crowd tonight. Especially the lady in the audience who gave her boyfriend a “hand”. Spread through the cast/crew like wild fire. Exciting, but please arrive at the theatre ready to watch & not to play.
